| Description |
This is a long race with a large amount of climb, visiting some exposed areas. Navigational skills and experience of long distance racing are a prerequisite. The race starts from the hillside by the road above Stair, grid reference NY233212 and climbs steeply to the first checkpoint at Causey Pike. Checkpoint number 2 is on Outerside and from there the route heads for Grasmoor, checkpoint 3, the highest point in the race. It then visits Whiteless Pike (Checkpoint 4) and after a steep plunge to Sail Beck it reaches Newlands Hause. There is a cut-off time of two and a half hours at this checkpoint; runners reaching Newlands Hause after the cut-off time will be asked to retire and return to Stair. Checkpoint 6 is High Snockrigg, a good vantage point overlooking Buttermere. The route then crosses Buttermere Moss and after a steep climb reaches Robinson. From Robinson the race follows the same route as the Anniversary Waltz, visiting Hindscarth, Dale Head, High Spy and Cat Bells and finishes at a field near Newlands village hall. |
